Having listened to a fair few radio sets in my time, I can say without much doubt that live radio can't be replicated. It's an immediate form, and Ghetts punching Silencer's Dirtbag right on the nose to start the set would have been even more gully in the moment.
This afternoon I willingly immersed myself into the Kisskube, arguably the clumsiest-named radio player on the net and, similar to David Blaine's willing immersion into that cube over the Thames, I found I couldn't get out. Every time I go into the Kube my computer freezes and whizzes frantically, as if on the wrong end of a virtual punch-up. It was a slog but things eventually got going, with even some new music to kick-off.
Roll Deep - Roll Deep Rally
J2K continues to breathe vitality into the entourage and, with the upbeat Swindle production, this is a nice little tune. Scratchy and Riko have featured quite a bit on the pirates recently, and hopefully recent momentum can be brought to the crew as a whole.
Still, where's Killa P?
Swindle's productions are at Spyro's mercy in a recent set with Purple and Realist. Have a listen. His instrumental CD, 'Cirriculum Vitae', is out on 30th March. Three days before, OT Crew's 'Left To Rot' should have landed. This should be on it.
O.T Crew - Military Strength (Radio Rip)
Dogzilla and Devlin have also been active on the pirates recently, as has Trim, who was Logan's first guest. He talked all yardie, emphasising his claims that he's one of, if not the best, yardie spitter in the game. An honourable mention was reserved for Doctor, and Riko was paternally referred to as 'the daddy'. I paused for thought.
Where's Killa P?
Ghetts had a laugh on the set while maintaining high levels of spitting. Wretch can still rhyme on grime with ease. It was a nice vibe, although it was compromised by the beat before Club 5. Someone tell me what it is. Please. It's driving me fucking mad.
Cheers.

"I'll Start Smashing Up Your Mixing Desk...Until It Can't Be Repaired"
After last week's white powder proliferation, and Logan geared up for radio only to be denied access like an MC turning up to Marcus Nasty's funky show, I was cruelly denied my weekly fix of Next Hype. I locked in last night, fighting off lingering tiredness, only for the instrumental to pop out its grinning face with mere minutes remaining.
Still, this wasn't an ordinary show, and last week's postponement inadvertently highlighted the point.
======================================
Rapid (Feat. Ghetto) - One Way Road (Radio Rip)
Rapid continues to dabble with autotune, following from Bring Your Click and Superman, but as an MC he's added intensity and beginning to make a mark on tracks. Hopefully his album arrives soon.
Badness (Feat. God's Gift) - Jump Off (Radio Rip)
I never used to rate Badness, but he's been doing impressive things for a good few months now. This is a great track, almost like a more credible Message Is Love. His album is due for release next month, and it might be worth a look.
Dot Rotten & Brutal - I'm A Professional Remix (Radio Rip)
The original, from my favourite mixtape last year, 'R.I.P Young Dot', was a straight skip. I like the remix though, and Brutal continues to improve every time I hear him. Hopefully it's not too late for another attempt at '10% Effort'.
======================================
DJ Spyro was the guest, only the second after his good mate DJ Mak 10. He wasted no time in making a brave stance against the Sama monarchy, hastily proclaiming that he's mixed for three years longer, despite being four years Logan's junior. Been mixing since he was eleven, apparently. When I was eleven, I was just trying to get home in one piece and avoid beatings from the olders at school.
Spyro even used to pratise on the kitchen table, which raised faint memories of December 4th on Jay-Z's 'Black Album' and a young Carter knocking on the table, rapping.
"At four, he taught his-self how to ride a bike; a two-wheel at that. Isn't that special?"
I can appreciate a mother's pride, as well as a precocious, wide-eyed Jay-Z careering down hills and wallowing in his new-found, two-wheeled freedom but, to be fair, the mix was arguably more special. Every mix wasn't flawless, but just the novelty value was enough.
Maybe next time if Logan and Spyro did it on unicycles, with perfect mixing throughout. That would be special, as I'm sure Ms Carter would agree.

DJ Spyro - Old School Set
Cheeky update.
I hadn't locked into Spyro for ages until tonight. The set was brilliant, with flawless mixing as standard and a top-notch selection. I didn't record it all; TNT's Nissi escaped, but still there's about an hour and a half's audio here with more than enough classics: 138 Trek, Champagne Dance, 21 Seconds. That Gorillaz tune.
It worked though. Nothing but happy vibes, this is a straight download. Enjoy.

Rinse 07: Spyro

I haven't really been following the Rinse Mix CDs but, after seeing Spyro's latest edition, I might have to change that.
I've only listened to Skepta's Rinse 04 mix and, despite the selection being true to the genre, the lack of versatility thanks to the glut of Boy Better Know tunes, tunes which most fans have heard before, did disappoint.
Rinse 04 partly serves as an introduction, but still Spyro's attempt seems to bring greater variety with grime still holding a slight sway. And the mix should be better, what with him still regularly DJing and all that.
Have a look at the Fact Magazine preview here.
